A W e decided to dedicate a portion of the entry on the film with Mario Monicelli, who died tragically in Rome on November 29 last year.
Monicelli's films have profoundly marked the history of Italian cinema, telling a country and its many contradictions also with great irony. Unknown thieves, L'armata Brancaleone, The Great War, The Marchese del Grillo, popular novels and other works of the Tuscan director, father of Italian comedy, they are still much loved by audiences of all ages.

The official debut of Mario Monicelli (1915-2010) was with Stephen Vanzina, aka Steno, in 1951, when the two directors have a combined film Totò, Cops and Robbers . Since 1953 Monicelli began to work alone, contributing to the success of Italian cinema after World War II. He worked with the most famous Italian actors of the time, like Alberto Sordi, Totò, Anna Magnani, Nino Manfredi, Vittorio Gassman, Marcello Mastroianni. In 1958 he made his most famous masterpiece, The Usual unknown. The film was an instant success. It is unanimously considered by critics to the first feature of the genre of Italian comedy . In 1959, Monicelli won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival for The Great War , given the director's best work ever. That same year, The Great War received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Mario Monicelli continued to work hard until the age of 91 when he made his last feature, Desert Roses , with a cast of young actors, members of the new Italian cinema. In 2010, the Tuscan has produced a short film called Brancaleone The new army, a work of protest against cuts to culture and education of the Berlusconi government. On the evening of November 29, 2010 the father of Italian comedy, which is strongly felt due to a tumor, he took his life in Rome. He was 95. On December 5, Radio Tre dedicated to Mario Monicelli an episode of The Great Radio transmission proposing a series of interviews with the director.

The Great War (Italy, 1959)

Directed by: Mario Monicelli
Cast: Vittorio Gassman, Alberto Sordi, Silvana Mangano
Plot: the Oreste Jacovacci the Roman and Milanese Giovanni Busacca is meet at the call to arms for the first World War. Despite the different characters, the two have in common the lack of ideals and the will to emerge unscathed from the war, whatever the cost. Given good little soldiers by their commanders, are chosen as relay runners. Captured by the Austrians during the war, are threatened with being shot. The two, just to save themselves, declare their willingness to disclose valuable military secrets to enemies, but is a racist commander of the Austrian army pushes John and Orestes to choose death instead of treason.

The Great War is considered by critics the most important film of Mario Monicelli. Characterized by the happy marriage of comedy and tragedy, the opera tells a painful and dramatic in European history, World War I, from the perspective of those who fought in the trenches. The historical reconstruction is excellent, one of the best ever produced by our cinema. This book provides a representation of the conflict in '15-'18 free from fascist rhetoric, which portrayed the Italian soldiers involved as indomitable heroes, willing to sacrifice for their country. In fact, for this reason, The Great War was hard hit by censorship. The film openly denounces the absurdity of the First World War and its violence, that somehow the Italian soldiers were able to overcome by establishing strong links between them, regardless of the regions of origin. Perfect, and after hearing the interpretations of Gassman and Deaf: the latter was awarded for the test with remarkable Nastro D'Argento and the David di Donatello in 1960.
